Hand-painted illustration of Gérard DuBois on a vase created by Montreal ceramist Ronald Pothier. This unique piece, approximately 12 cm high, is ideal for holding pencils, paintbrushes, flowers, lattes, or other items. This vase is part of a collection of 20 pieces illustrated by 19 great illustrators.
Born in France, Gérard DuBois studied graphic arts in Paris for five years. In 1991, he moved to Montreal and began working as an illustrator for the press and publishing industry. His clients include The New York Times—for which he contributed weekly to the "Gray Matter" column for nearly two years—The Wall Street Journal, Time magazine—for which he illustrated a column for two years—GQ, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, The Washington Post, Le Monde, XXI, Le Nouvel Obs, Télérama, The Guardian, Playboy, and many others.
For nearly 30 years, his work has received many of the most prestigious accolades, both for his editorial work and for his books. In 2022, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London awarded him the Book Illustration Award for The Road and the Moira Gemmill Illustrator of the Year Award. In the same year, Gérard DuBois also won a Bologna Ragazzi Award in the Fiction category for the book À Qui appartient les nuages? (To Whom Do the Clouds Belong?), and a Governor General of Canada Award in 2021 for the same work. Also in 2021, his book On the Other Side of the Forest was listed in the New York Times/New York Public Library's list of the 10 best illustrated children's books of the year. In 2018, Canada Post unveiled a Gérard DuBois stamp, featured in the series of five "Great Canadian Illustrators" stamps issued in tribute to their remarkable work.
