A collaborative illustration by Esmé Shapiro and Isabelle Arsenault, hand-painted on a vase created by Montreal ceramist Ronald Pothier. This unique piece, approximately 12 cm high, is ideal for holding pencils, brushes, flowers, lattes, or anything else. This vase is part of a collection of 20 pieces illustrated by 19 great names in illustration.

Esmé Shapiro was born in Los Angeles, California. She spent most of her childhood wandering through the dry brush and flowering succulents of Laurel Canyon. In 2010, she ventured east to study at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island. She now divides her time between the Hudson Valley and New York City. Her favorite place to paint is her studio on her farm in the Catskills, where she surrounds herself with numerous animals and flowers. She lives with her husband, Daniel Kaufman, a filmmaker, and their two scruffy dogs, Chebini and Olympia. She'll never say no to a bagel. She was recently in Montreal and took the time to paint a vase for us, while chatting about life and the weather.

Isabelle Arsenault is an internationally renowned children's book illustrator whose work has won numerous awards and critical acclaim. Her illustrators include the graphic novels Jane, the Fox and Me and Louis Among the Specters by Fanny Britt, Fourchon and Virginia Wolf by Kyo Maclear, A Rags Lullaby by Amy Novesky (Bologna Ragazzi Award 2017), and The Bird by Colette, the latter marking her debut as an author. She has won the prestigious Governor General's Award for Children's Literature three times, and three of her albums were ranked by the New York Times among the 10 best illustrated books of the year in 2011, 2013 and 2019. The poetry expressed in Isabelle Arsenault's graphic universe, the softness of her line and the evocative power of her entire body of work have made her one of Canada's most well-known and esteemed illustrators. She is also the co-founder of LEPORELLO, with her husband, publisher and co-founder of La Pastèque Frédéric Gauthier.
